Bondage is an emotional exchange between two people, who through the medium of rope give expression to their love.

In the original meaning of the term, bondage means the removal of freedom and submission. However, in the BDSM context bondage designates a whole array of sexually exciting practices of movement restriction. For this reason, many say: "When I am tied, I am free."

Mutually enjoyable bondage requires connection and contact, long before you take the rope in your hand. Long before the rope touches your body, you let yourself fall. And this requires trust in one another and devotion to the rope. First, it is necessary to be able to touch without any tool, and only then may contact arise with the tying and finally allow the rope to take the lead.

This class will not be about complicated knots or mastery. You will learn a few of the technical basics of Japanese bondage, and discover rope as a conscious touch and a loving encounter. Bondage need not be beautiful and perfect for it to feel alive and to give pleasure. For it to go deep, it is not necessary that the rope turn you on.

When tying or being tied, you feel your pleasure/displeasure, fear, anger and all the nuances of the whole rich pallet of human feelings...and you take to heart what is there. And perhaps this has a healing aspect. All experience levels in bondage are welcome. Experience with attentive touch, breathwork and tantra is advantageous. (This year's weekly shibari workshop concept has been adapted from the work of German-based shibari practitioner and performer, Matthias Grimme)

It is possible to come single or with a partner. Ropes are available, although it is also advised to bring your own, if you have.

Workshop is led by Peter Banki, Ph.D. assisted by Natalia Je and Sion

Technique classes draws inspiration from Osada Steve's systematic approach (single column tie up to 3-rope takate kote and yoko zuri suspensions), Dasniya Sommer's messy bondage and Hajime Kinoko's extraordinary 2012 Schwelle Sydney workshops.
