BDSM and Performance

Schwelle Sydney proposes a space where you may create and develop a BDSM performance in a reflective, nourishing and supportive environment.

Berlin-based choreographer Felix Ruckert has argued that BDSM rituals and theatre are very similar, for they both aim for the event, for wonder and astonishment, for the space to change:

“…in order to get the necessary presence, the necessary power for the performance, in art you work with art techniques, with musical skills, acting and dance skills, but in BDSM you work with the very core emotions: fear, pain, shame, lust, anger, etc.

Because apparently if these emotions are triggered, they create presence, they create a strong impact, and in that sense they also create form: they structure the perception of the audience and therefore in that feedback loop with the performer, they also structure the performer…because space and emotion are very strongly linked. There is emotional space and there is spatial emotion.” (Interview on Xplore with Peter Banki, 2012)

Our research will be guided by questions such as: How to organize and shift space and emotion, so it is effective and powerful for an audience and for you as the performer? What effects and thoughts do you want to create? And why? What spatial and temporal options are available? And how does one work effectively with other performers?

It is our intention that the workshop will lead to a performance night with a series of short performances for an audience of close friends.

The cost for participation in the workshop will be decided by the participants themselves.
